Released in 1976, Shyam Benegal made a film funded by five hundred thousand Gujarati farmers, who each contributed two rupees. It told the story of the cooperative dairy movement that became Amul, and it told it with a clarity Indian cinema had rarely managed before. It became the rare Indian film whose financing was as radical as its subject, and a foundational text of the parallel cinema movement.
