Released in 1997, Majid Majidi turned the loss of a pair of shoes into one of Iranian cinema’s most moving stories of childhood. Amir Farrokh Hashemian plays Ali, a young boy who accidentally misplaces his sister Zahra’s shoes and devises a secret plan for them to share his only pair without telling their struggling parents. Children of Heaven finds suspense and emotion in the smallest moments, treating an ordinary childhood problem with remarkable tenderness and dignity. Beneath its simplicity is a beautiful film about poverty, sibling love and the quiet sacrifices children make for one another.
