Released in 2006, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra made a film that arrived at exactly the moment urban Indian youth were ready to be told they should be angrier. A.R. Rahman's score, a documentary-within-a-film, and a generation of students suddenly seeing themselves as the inheritors of a revolution they had been taught only as history. It became the film that genuinely sent young Indians to India Gate with candles, and changed what mainstream Hindi cinema thought it was allowed to ask of its audience.
