Released in 1957, Guru Dutt made a film about a poet the world had no use for, and made himself the patron saint of every misunderstood Indian artist who came after. Sahir Ludhianvi's lyrics, S.D. Burman's score, and a final song that still feels like an indictment. It became the film Time magazine eventually listed among the hundred best ever made, decades after India had already canonised it.
