Released in 2015, Shoojit Sircar turned an ordinary family road trip into a warm, sharply observed portrait of ageing, responsibility and the complicated love between a father and daughter. Deepika Padukone’s Piku is independent, impatient and constantly negotiating life around Amitabh Bachchan’s eccentric, demanding Bhaskor Banerjee, while Irrfan Khan’s Rana becomes an amused outsider drawn into their chaos. Piku finds humour in everyday irritation without reducing its characters to caricatures. Beneath the arguments and digestive complaints is a deeply affectionate film about caregiving, freedom and the relationships that exhaust us precisely because they matter so much.
